CERTIFICATE IN GRAMMAR & WRITING

This course will revise your knowledge of key grammatical structures and rules leading to clear and accurate writing in everyday work related correspondence such as emails, letters, minutes of meetings, reports and social media.You will be awarded with a Certificate of Attendance by Ascend – The English Professionals – upon fulfilling the attendance requirement of 75% or above by the end of the course.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The 48 hour course is divided into two 24 hour modules. The first module of 12 sessions focuses on reviewing your knowledge of key grammatical rules. This part of the course is recommended for students with an intermediate level of grammar who need to focus on strengthening their grammatical skills.

The second module of 12 sessions focus on applying grammar rules as well as ensuring your writing meets standard professional guidelines: coherent, cohesive, and demonstrates a natural use of appropriate collocations and business phrases in different writing formats such as emails, letters, minutes’ of meetings, reports and social media.

On this course, you will learn how to:
  • connect with your colleagues and clients by thinking about the information they need from you
  • establish your purpose of writing
  • manage and present your ideas clearly
  • improve your use of vocabulary in a business context
  • improve your grammatical control
  • develop your editing skills
By the end of the course, you will have developed language skills necessary to:
  • write coherently to express your ideas clearly at work
  • write cohesively to link your ideas more effectively in the workplace
  • use a range of appropriate collocations and business phrases for writing
  • identify, understand and apply the critical rules of grammar in your writing
    identify and self-edit common errors

COURSE TRAINER

Carolyn Penny, from Canada, is our Grammar and Writing master trainer and she has been training students in grammar and writing in Singapore for over 10 years. To achieve the key learning outcomes of this course Carolyn will use authentic and adapted materials and motivating learner-centred activities such as mini-presentations, discussions and guided practice in the classroom. This way, you will have ample opportunities to apply the language you need to know to write with greater clarity and accuracy in a variety of workplace situations. Carolyn will:

  • revise your knowledge of critical grammar structures and rules
  • focus on improving your writing process leading to clear and accurate writing in everyday work related writing and correspondence such as emails, letters, minutes of meetings, reports and social media.

Course Learning Outcomes

Module 1: Grammar for Writing

    • identify and distinguish between countable & uncountable nouns
    • cohesively put quantifiers and nouns together
    • put articles and nouns cohesively together
    • identify and solve problems in subject-verb agreement
    • write an effective Cover Letter with appropriate collocations
    • understand the role of helping verbs
    • understand the English map of time
    • accurately describe past time
    • accurately describe present time
    • accurately describe future time
    • use modals to express degrees of certainty and uncertainty
    • use conditionals to express degrees of future probability
    • use the passive appropriately

Module 2: Writing

  • plan and write a coherent paragraph
  • build cohesive sentences using logical linking words
  • build cohesive sentences using grammatical linking words
  • use business collocations and phrases appropriately
  • write an effective Cover Letter with appropriate collocations
  • write an effective CV with appropriate collocations
  • effectively plan an email before writing it
  • distinguish between different levels of formality in email writing
  • write a professional email
  • effectively plan and write simple reports
  • effectively plan and write minutes of meetings
  • effectively plan and write for Social Media

The test will take 30-45 minutes. The purpose of the test is to find out your current level of written English. Your grammatical knowledge should be at least at a lower intermediate level – Intermediate level. This way the participants in the course can communicate effectively with each other. Please bring your IC/Passport with you for identification purposes.

Step 2: Decide if you want to enroll by completing Application Form and pay fees
Upon receiving your writing test result from our professional teacher and provided it is between lower to upper Intermediate, you can decide if you wish to apply for the course. The choice is yours.

To apply for admission, you need to fill in the application form and pay a non-refundable application fee of $60.50 for administrative purposes. We recommend for students that are at an intermediate level that they take both modules of the course. Students at an Upper Intermediate level have the option of taking just the writing module.

Profile of Ascend Master Trainer in Grammar & Writing

    Carolyn Penny is originally from Canada. She is a TEFL certified English teacher and has been teaching in Singapore for ten years. She has a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations/Geography. As well as a Post-Graduate Diploma in Geomatics. Before coming to Singapore she was a Corporate Trainer for Geographic Informations Systems (GIS) in the USA. Carolyn loves meeting students from all around the world. She loves teaching grammar and believes in encouraging students to enjoy her classes so they can reflect positively on what they are learning.
